What an Irish driving licence actually costs

Every payment on the way: theory, eyesight, permit, twelve EDT lessons, the test, the licence — and where the money actually goes.

An Irish licence is not one payment but six or seven. The shape of the bill is predictable, and most of it goes to your instructor rather than the state.

Where the money goes

• The theory test — a flat fee per sitting. Fail and you pay again, which is the cheapest argument for preparing properly.
• The eyesight report — anywhere from free to about €20–30 depending on the optician. Ring two or three.
• The learner permit — an NDLS fee, payable for each permit issued.
• Twelve EDT lessons — the big one. Hourly rates vary by county; Dublin costs more than the commuter belt.
• Extra lessons before the test — almost everyone takes a few.
• The driving test — a flat fee per sitting.
• Hiring the instructor’s car for the test — usually charged as a two-hour block.
• The full licence — another NDLS fee.

Where people actually save

On the theory test, by passing first time. A resit costs the same as the first sitting and the wait is measured in weeks. Free preparation is enough: the bank is public, and all of it is on this site.

On the practical side, by practising with a qualified accompanying driver between EDT lessons. An hour with an instructor costs several times an hour with a friend who holds a full licence — and the three-day gap EDT recommends exists for exactly that.
