CPC Step 2: the case study exam

What the exam is, how the cases work, what you need to score, and why “28 out of 45” is not the whole rule.

CPC stands for Certificate of Professional Competence, the qualification professional truck and bus drivers need. Step 2 is the case study exam: you are given the story of a driver’s working day and asked questions about it.

• Three cases of fifteen questions — 45 in total, in 135 minutes.
• The pass mark is 28 out of 45.
• And separately: at least five correct in every case. Failing one case sinks the whole exam, however good the total.

The stories are written so the driver makes mistakes: exceeding driving hours, skipping a check, securing a load badly. Your job is to spot them. Read slowly — nearly every detail turns up in a question.
