Who does not need all twelve EDT lessons

Full exemptions, the reduced six-lesson course, and the myths that cost people money.

EDT is twelve mandatory lessons for anyone whose first learner permit was issued after April 2011. There are fewer exemptions than people assume, but they exist.

  • A first permit issued before April 2011: no EDT required.
  • An exchange under an agreement: no test and no EDT at all.
  • A full licence from a non-exchange country: usually a reduced six-lesson course.
  • Changing transmission type does not restart EDT, but it does mean sitting the test again.

What an exemption does not do

No exemption removes the theory test, the eyesight report or the driving test. And none of them applies automatically — you confirm eligibility with the RSA before paying for a course.
